Kumkum Lal spent four years in Japan along with her husband Ashok Lal. During this time, she taught Odissi in both Tokyo and Osaka. She was the first Indian teacher of Indian Classical in Japan and was instrumental is spreading not just Orissi dance but, through her extensive dance and lecture demonstrations and tours, an appreaciation and understanding of the Indian performing arts. In 1986, she was joined by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra for an extensive tour that included several cities. These videos are from a performance in Aoyama, Tokyo on June 7th 1986.
